Immigration New Zealand has announced important updates affecting international graduates and offshore student visa holders. These changes introduce new work visa pathways and streamline visa cancellation processes.
New Work Visa Options for Graduates (From 16 November 2026)
From 16 November 2026, new work visa options will be available for international students who complete their studies in New Zealand.
1. Short-term Graduate Work Visa (SGWV)
A 6-month Short-term Graduate Work Visa (SGWV) will be introduced for graduates who do not meet the requirements for a Post Study Work Visa (PSWV).
Eligibility requirements:
- Completion of a NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification
- Study undertaken full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
- Qualification must be eligible (excluding English language, foundation, and bridging programmes)
This visa provides a short-term opportunity for graduates to gain New Zealand work experience.
Important conditions:
- The SGWV is a one-time visa and cannot be extended or granted again
- Holders cannot apply for a second SGWV
- However, they may apply for a new student visa if they enrol in a higher-level qualification (bachelor’s degree or above) that leads to eligibility for a Post Study Work Visa
- In such cases, they must continue to meet these requirements and cannot change their programme or education provider unless eligibility is maintained
2. Expanded Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) Eligibility
Eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) is being extended to include:
- Graduates who complete a New Zealand graduate diploma, and
- Hold a bachelor’s degree (including degrees obtained outside New Zealand)
Key conditions:
- The graduate diploma must be fully completed in New Zealand
- Study must not include recognised prior learning, cross-crediting, or similar arrangements
Visa duration:
- Granted for the same length of time spent studying the graduate diploma, up to a maximum of 12 months
Application Deadline
Graduates must apply for either the SGWV or PSWV within 3 months of their relevant student visa expiring.
Process Change for Offshore Student Visa Holders
A significant procedural change has been introduced for student visa holders who are outside New Zealand and whose enrolment has been terminated.
What has changed?
- Immigration New Zealand will no longer issue a Potentially Prejudicial Information (PPI) letter before cancelling a visa in these circumstances
- Once an education provider confirms that enrolment has been terminated, Immigration New Zealand has sufficient information to:
- Proceed directly with visa cancellation, and
- Notify the individual of the decision
This change simplifies and speeds up the process for handling offshore student visa cancellations.
What This Means for Students and Graduates
Students and graduates should plan carefully, particularly around eligibility criteria and application deadlines, to ensure they maximise their opportunities and remain compliant with immigration requirements.
