New Zealand Accredited Work Visa Reforms: What You Need to Know
The latest updates on New Zealand’s Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) program. Immigration New Zealand has announced significant reforms set to roll out throughout 2025, aimed at streamlining processes and addressing skill gaps in the labour market.
Key Changes to the AEWV Program
Removal of Median Wage Requirement
- From March 2025, the median wage threshold for AEWV roles will be eliminated. Employers must still offer market rates based on position and location, ensuring fair compensation for migrant workers.
Reduced Experience Requirements
The work experience requirement for migrants will decrease from 3 years to 2 years, making it easier for skilled workers to qualify for New Zealand work visas.
New Seasonal Worker Pathways
November 2025 will see the introduction of two new visa options for seasonal workers:
- A 3-year multi-entry visa for experienced workers
- A 7-month single-entry visa for lesser-skilled workers
Extended Visa Duration
AEWV holders in ANZSCO Level 4 or 5 roles will now receive 3-year visas, aligning with the maximum stay period under the AEWV program.
Interim Visas for Smooth Transitions
Staff moving from student visas or certain other work visas to an AEWV will now receive interim visas, which will allow these visa holders to continue working while waiting for approval of their AEWV.
WINZ Engagement Simplified
A simple declaration of advertising and interviewing suitable WINZ candidates will suffice, for skill level 4 and 5 roles employers will now suffice. Evidence of engagement with WINZ is no longer required.
Streamlined Job Check Process
Immigration New Zealand is redesigning the Job Check step, set to launch in mid-2025. This will expedite approvals for low-risk employers and reduce processing times. Timeline of Implementation
- January 2025: Removal of Employment New Zealand online module requirements
- March 2025: Implementation of major changes, including median wage removal and experience requirement reduction
- April 2025: Extended work rights for interim visa holders
- Mid-2025: Introduction of the redesigned Job Check process
- November 2025: Launch of new seasonal worker pathways
