New Pathway for Secondary School Teachers to Fast-track Residency in New Zealand
In an effort to address workforce shortages and attract skilled educators, the New Zealand government has introduced the Straight to Residence (STR) pathway for secondary school teachers. Starting in May 2024, this initiative allows eligible secondary school teachers to apply for residency directly upon securing a job in New Zealand, provided they meet the necessary policy requirements.
Under this pathway, qualified and NZ-registered migrant secondary teachers already working in New Zealand can seek the STR Visa, granting them the opportunity to pursue residency. Additionally, overseas secondary school teachers meeting the specified criteria will also be able apply for residency from abroad once they secure employment with an accredited New Zealand employer.
This strategic change is especially targeted at subject areas facing shortages, notably Science, Technology, and Mathematics. The government’s decision to implement this pathway reflects its commitment to bolstering the education sector and ensuring that students have access to proficient educators.
It is important to note that this adjustment specifically applies to secondary school teachers. Teachers in other roles such as Early Childhood, Primary, and Special Needs will continue under the Green List Work to Residence pathway, which grants eligibility for residency after two years of working in New Zealand.
