Exciting News for Truck Drivers: A Pathway to Residency in New Zealand

The Opportunity

The recent transport sector agreement, announced by the Minister of Immigration and Transport, brings exciting news for migrant truck drivers in New Zealand. This agreement introduces a 2-year work-to-residence pathway, offering eligible truck drivers with specific work experience the opportunity to migrate to and establish themselves in New Zealand.

Eligible Occupations:

  • Truck Driver (733111),
  • Aircraft Refueller (733112),
  • Furniture Removalist (733113),
  • Tanker Driver (733114),
  • Tow Truck Driver (733115)

Eligibility Criteria

License Requirement: Truck drivers must possess a New Zealand class 4 or 5 license.

Experience Requirement: Drivers must have a minimum of two years of experience driving trucks that fall under these license categories.

Wage Requirements:

  • Resident Visa Applicants: Truck drivers applying for a New Zealand Resident Visa must earn $31.61 per hour or more. Therefore, we recommend truck drivers secure a job offer with a minimum pay rate of $31.61 per hour to meet the work to residence requirements.

Application Process

Starting from 29 September 2023, eligible truck drivers can submit their residency applications. There is no cap or upper limit set for the number of drivers who will be offered residency under the sector agreement, making this a significant opportunity for those who qualify.

Important Information

  • Continuous experience driving class 4 or 5 trucks for a minimum of two years is likely to be a requirement for eligibility.
  • Overseas driver’s licenses will undergo a verification process as part of the residency application.
  • The sector agreement will undergo a review approximately 12 months after its initiation, around 29 September 2024. However, any alterations made to the agreement will not impact truck drivers who are already on the 2-year work-to-residence pathway.
